Explore Big Hunan

If you’re exploring dining options in Cortland, one spot that consistently stands out is Big Hunan, a local Chinese restaurant that has built a strong reputation for both its food and welcoming atmosphere. What immediately strikes many visitors is the friendliness of the staff-there’s a genuine warmth here that makes you feel like more than just a customer. The menu may look familiar at first glance, featuring classic Chinese-American dishes, but the flavors often set it apart from other places in town. Dishes like General Tso’s Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken arrive hot, fresh, and full of flavor, with a noticeable attention to quality that keeps people coming back. The egg rolls, for example, are often praised for tasting freshly made rather than pre-packaged. What makes this restaurant especially interesting is how it puts its own spin on traditional recipes; some items, like the hot and sour soup, are considered among the best in the area, while others offer a slightly different take that gives diners a refreshing change from the usual. Even menu items that might not be everyone’s top choice still contribute to the overall variety and uniqueness of the experience. For those who have tried multiple Chinese restaurants nearby, Big Hunan offers something distinct-subtle differences in preparation and ingredients that make familiar dishes feel new again. Whether you’re picking up a quick meal after a long day or trying it for the first time while exploring Cortland, this restaurant delivers a combination of flavor, freshness, and personable service that leaves a strong impression.

Nathan and Jessi say this is the best food in Cortland! Awesome people and very friendly! They are some of the greatest people I've ever met!

TLDR: Very tasty I just moved to Cortland with my Fiancee from Binghamon, and we're big fans of Chinese food. We spotted this place while driving around, exploring the area, and I made note of it. Today I wasn't up to cooking so I made an online order. We got 2 combos. General Tso's Chicken, and Kung Pao Chicken. The food was nice and hot and delicious. Better than anything in Binghamton. The egg rolls tasted nice and fresh. I will be coming back.

For lack of a better way of putting it, this is the most different Chinese food in Cortland. Most of the other Chinese places seem to all be pulling from the exact same recipes with very little difference from one restaurant to another. Hunan has more or less the same menu as everyone else, but their recipes seem to be either homegrown, or based on some different footprint. The result of this is that there are some things I feel they're the absolute best in town for, like the hot and sour soup, while other things aren't my favorite like the Sesame Chicken, and still others are just a nice change of pace, like the boneless ribs (which seem to use a different cut than any other place, which is neither better nor worse IMO.) I guess if you're eating at other Chinese places in Crotland and feel like some specific menu item is lacking, it can't hurt to try this place. Also, I did hear that delivery can be slow with this restaurant, but can't confirm this since I always pick up my orders.

I'm a bus driver in town for a tournament. My group was a banquet for dinner, they invited me but I couldn't leave the bus near enough to attend so I was on my own for dinner. I come from downstate and Chinese food is a very popular in my area and family (I'm Italian and only Italian food is bigger than Chinese with us). So I gave this place a shot. There is a huge difference between downstate and upstate when it comes to foods, especially Chinese and Pizza, so I honestly was expecting much. I order a Garlic Chicken Combo and Fried Dumplings. OK first the Dumplings: They did not taste at all like the FD I'm used to, however, that does not mean they were bad. In fact I found them to be quite good and enjoyed the difference. Next the chicken: OUTSTANDING! Very tasty and a very generous portion. And the egg rolls were very good as well. And for what would easily cost over $20 downstate I paid $16 and some change. Also as noted by some other reviewers, some of the staff was said to be rude, but I found the 2 ladies working to be very friendly. Food was ready in under 20 minutes and was piping hot and fresh. While I'm not a regular to the Cortland area I would come back here if I visited again and would recommend this place to others.

Unlike their local counterparts, the general tso's chicken didn't taste like it was tossed in ketchup and corn syrup. Fresh rice, quality ingredients, and about $10 less to feed 3. Will definitely be back!

The food has always been good (we only get one thing though) it's got tables but no one seems to use them which is a shame. It's kinda cool to look in the back one see them making the food too. As long as you order ahead there shouldnt be too much of a wait. It's nice, worth a try.

Delicious food served quickly! Definitely the best bang for your buck! Our party ordered several dishes and they were all correct and piping hot. I absolutely recommend the pork Mai fun and the dumplings. A great hole in the wall!

The food isn't bad here, but the people working there are a big part of why i go here, always pleasant, and if something gets messed up on my order ( happens rarely ) they are always quick to make it right. And go above and beyond to make sure I'm happy walking out the door.
